Educational Adviser

MAJOR FUNCTION

 

Under the direction of a Lead Educational Adviser, responsible for providing individual educational advising and arranging educational opportunities for approximately 23 scholarship recipients who are gifted high school students from low-income to moderate-income families throughout the US.

 

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

 

1.     Develops an annual Individualized Learning Plan (ILP), including budget recommendations, for each scholarship recipient identifying the appropriate high school placement and curriculum, academic enrichment activities, summer learning experiences, extracurricular activities, and college placement.  Revises this plan each year throughout the Scholar’s high school career.

 

2.     Works with each new scholarship recipient and his/her family during the eighth-grade year to identify the recipient’s academic and extracurricular talents, needs, and opportunities.  Also helps the Scholar prepare for entry into high school.

 

3.     Provides college advising to each scholarship recipient and his/her family during the eleventh and twelfth-grade years.  Also helps the Scholar prepare for entry into college.

 

4.     Provides ongoing academic advising and support to scholarship recipients and their families throughout the year, both in person and by telephone and email.

 

5.     Identifies the appropriate vendors to provide ILP services to scholarship recipients and arranges for vendor payment.

 

6.     Assists with tracking of payments to vendors for ILP services provided to scholarship recipients and maintaining adequate accounting records.  Reports unspent funds mid-year and checks in with parents and vendors about inconsistencies in lesson visits, etc.

 

7.     Researches, recommends and as appropriate, establishes relationships with private school admissions and business office personnel, college admissions officers, as well as summer program admissions staff.  Assists scholars with applying for financial aid for private schools, colleges, and summer programs.

 

8.     Visits scholarship recipients and their families to learn more about recipients’ needs, accomplishments, and school setting.

 

9.     Assists with preparation and management of residential summer Young Scholars programs in the Washington, D.C. area.

 

10.  Maintains an accurate file for each recipient tracking all correspondence and documenting the recipient’s progress.

 

11.  Reviews periodic progress reports from recipients, their families, schools, and vendors and recommends decisions on renewal, probation, and dismissal.

 

12.  Participates in the annual Young Scholars selection process.

 

13.  Assists with preparation of periodic assessment of overall Young Scholars Program effectiveness and opportunities for improvement.

 

14.  Assists in development or identification of materials to provide to recipients and their families on topics of interest (such as college planning, financial aid, or career education).

 

15.  Actively participates in Foundation meetings and works collaboratively with others to complete projects and goals.

 

16.  Other tasks as assigned.

 

 

 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

 

1.     Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree in school counseling, school psychology, gifted education, or other education-related field preferred. Relevant experience can substitute for master’s degree. 

 

2.     Minimum of four years of experience in a counseling, educational, youth development, or other relevant setting required.

 

3.     Experience working with low-income, high-achieving, first-generation students and families preferred.

 

4.     Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as experience with conflict resolution; strong ability to work with individual young people and their families. Bilingual skills a plus.

 

5.     Substantial knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

 

6.     Ability to work independently and simultaneously on multiple projects within close, overlapping, and/or conflicting deadlines.

 

7.     Must be a flexible team player, detail oriented, and have excellent organizational skills.
