Graduate Scholars Can Apply Now for U.S. State Department Program

Graduate Scholars Can Apply Now for US State Department Program

Jack Kent Cooke Scholars who will have completed their graduate studies by the conclusion of 2004 may now apply for the Diplomacy Fellows Program (DFP), a fast-track opportunity for stellar candidates to enter the Foreign Service. Scholars hoping to enter the Foreign Service as early as 2005 must ensure their applications arrive at the State Department by February 19, 2004.

The DFP allows Jack Kent Cooke Scholars to waive the first phase of the Foreign Service selection process, the written exam - which has a pass rate of less than 20% - and proceed directly to the second phase, the oral exam. By applying by this February 19, Scholars will be eligible for oral exams that begin shortly but run through April 2005. As announced in December 2003, the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation is the only private foundation whose Scholars have been invited to participate in the fast-track application program.

For more details on the DFP, please see the vacancy announcement on the State Department's website and the press release announcing the arrangement between the Foundation and the department.

In a related development, the department has announced that applicants to the DFP who pass the oral exam and can show fluency in targeted languages receive 0.4 bonus points, which significantly increases the likelihood of being chosen for a Foreign Service post. A full explanation of this policy is found in item 11 of the application process described here.
