Brown University (Providence, RI) is using its College Advising Corps grant to expand its existing college-access programs at the University’s Howard R. Swearer Center for Public Service. In addition to its part-time corps of student volunteer advisers, the program now also employs recent Brown and University of Rhode Island graduates as full-time advisers who provide guidance and one-on-one college advising services for as many as 1,750 students in 13 Rhode Island high schools. Advisers help students apply to a wide range of institutions that fit their academic profiles, career goals, and personal circumstances. In partnership with Rhode Island public schools and several community organizations, Brown and its graduates are working to give hundreds of qualified, low-income students in Rhode Island the opportunity to attend and graduate from college.
