Loyola College (Baltimore, MD) is using its College Advising Corps grant to implement a college advising program in Maryland high schools with low college-going rates and large numbers of low-income students. The program is designed to combat the staggering rates of college-qualified, low-income high school graduates who fail to earn bachelor’s degrees by providing college admission and financial-aid guidance to these disadvantaged students. The program employs recent Loyola graduates to work as full-time advisers in high schools statewide, providing advice on how to prepare for college and helping students identify the colleges and universities that best suit their interests. Over four years, the program will provide one-on-one advising, counseling and guidance to a total of 7,400 Maryland high school students.
