Pennsylvania State University (State College, PA), and its 24 campuses, is using its College Advising Corps grant to create a pre-college advising program that places advisers in underserved high schools statewide. The initiative aims to increase the number of college-qualified students with financial need who go on to earn bachelor's degrees by assisting them with college admission and financial-aid processes. The program recruits and trains recent college graduates to serve as full-time advisers in selected high schools for one to two years. Over four years, the program will provide one-on-one college advising services and group workshops to 3,100 high school students, eventually reaching a total of 15,500 students statewide. Initially, Penn State will implement the program in underserved high schools in Philadelphia, Harrisburg, and Reading, adding additional school districts over time.
