The University of Virginia

The University of Virginia (UVa) was awarded a Foundation grant in 2004 to develop and implement the first College Advising Corps program, which continues to serve as a model for other universities.  Today, UVa’s College Guide Program has 24 advisers in high schools and three community colleges throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia.  Recent graduates work as advisers in the high schools and community colleges, helping students in lower-income neighborhoods apply to colleges and universities that best fit their interests and career goals.  Since the program’s inception, the high schools and community colleges being served have witnessed significantly increased college-going and transfer rates.  For example, a school district in southwest Virginia increased its college-going rates from approximately 50 percent to 85 percent.  Numerous Virginia school districts also have seen a significant rise in the number of students taking SAT exams and filling out federal financial aid forms.
