Student Receives Prestigious Scholarship

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation recently awarded Catawba Valley Community College graduate Derval "Dale" Hamilton, its prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship. The most generous and competitive program of its kind, the scholarship provides Hamilton up to $30,000 a year for up to three years to complete his bachelor's degree at East Carolina University, where he is majoring in exercise physiology.

Hamilton is one of only 30 students chosen from a pool of 450 scholarship applicants. He earned an Information Systems Technologies degree at CVCC last May He completed additional college transfer classes this past year.

"Dale's journey is an incredible example of how community college changes lives," said Dr. Garrett Hinshaw, president of CVCC. "He started classes with us as a reserved, quiet student. Two years later, there isn't much Dale has not achieved, from student government officer to service organization volunteer."

Hamilton was a member of Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society and past officer in the Student Government Association. He was active in service efforts through CVCC's Circle K International Club and served as chapter president. He organized and motivated members to participate in local service projects and maintained the club's Web site, as well as the Hickory Kiwanis Club Web site. Hamilton received numerous state and regional honors for his involvement with Circle K.

He received numerous honors during CVCC's annual spring Awards Day, including the Community Service Volunteer Award and the CVCC Spirit of Service Award.

Hamilton is a past recipient of the Annelle Pegg Scholarship through the CVCC Foundation Inc. He also received a scholarship from the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation for his demonstrated academic success and participation in community service.

He was one of 115 community college students across the state to receive the Academic Excellence Award presented by the North Carolina Association of Community College Presidents.

While he maintained a competitive GPA and stayed involved in numerous school activities, Hamilton also volunteered with home-schooled children at the Catawba Science Center and in the rehab department at Catawba Valley Medical Center.
