Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Announces
Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship Recipients
LANSDOWNE, VA – Kristen O’Mara led NASA’s only Student Flight Program made up of community college students. Kelli Niemeyer was a member of an undergraduate research group studying the prevalence of the West Nile Virus in Wyoming. Matthew Seats turned his love of the outdoors into a business and now operates multiple outdoor adventure groups. They are three of the 60 recipients of this year’s Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship who this fall will continue their educations at some of the most prestigious universities in the country--from Columbia to Cornell and Brown.
The Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship enables the best community college students in the nation, who have significant financial need, to complete their bachelor's degrees at some of the best four-year colleges and universities. It is worth up to $30,000 annually, per student, for up to three years. With only 60 coveted spots, this year the competition was intense. “These were the most competitive few years we’ve had for these scholarships,” said Lawrence Kutner, Ph.D., executive director of the foundation. “This year we had nearly 800 applicants from community colleges in 20 states.”
For the past eleven years, the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation has supported the futures of over 1,300 scholars with almost $150 million and has positioned itself as a leader in the education community, supporting institutions and organizations with $81 million in grants to date.
