"I believe that it is important for everyone to study more than one language. Not only does it aid in communicating with people from other cultures, but it also gives a deeper understanding of the grammar and usage of one's own language."
After growing up in South Dakota, Maggie Brooks saw the ocean for the first time at age 18 on a trip with her high school debate team to Portland, Oregon. It inspired her to travel and explore the world. "Although I had never traveled much before that point, nor had I felt the desire to do so, I knew that I wanted to take advantage of any opportunity from that moment on to take risks and explore what the world has to offer," she says.
Maggie, who maintained a perfect GPA while earning her associate's degree in Spanish from Cottey College in 2002, wants to incorporate Spanish into a career in education or interpretation. While at Cottey, Maggie worked at a clerical job with the college and also was a member of the housing staff for Jenkins Assisted Living, where she helped residents, cleaned, and served meals.
After finishing her bachelor's degree at South Dakota State University, she hopes to pursue a master's degree in Spanish.
