"If I could go back in time and fix things to where I would have not had the tumor, I would obviously do it. However, I am afraid that if I did go back and change things that I may not have realized the importance of life, and that would be the real tragedy."
During his senior year of high school, Adam Vinson spent the month of March in the hospital. A pituitary tumor almost had taken his life, requiring him to stay in intensive care for 10 days and a hospital room for another nine.
It took Adam six months to realize that the tumor had been a blessing in disguise, he says. "Prior to that day, I had never really given much thought to my personal and professional aspirations. I knew I wanted to get a job that would pay well, but I never took pride in being the best I could be."
But suffering through this ordeal inspired Adam to want to help others who faced similar challenges. He worked with a doctor at his local hospital and at a pharmacy. "I went from a person who wanted to earn a high salary to an aspiring doctor who wanted to save people's lives," he says. "I went from giving some effort in school, to giving all my effort."
Adam will receive his associate's degree in pre-dentistry at Itawamba Community College in Fulton, Mississippi, in the spring of 2003 and will continue his studies at the University of Mississippi.
