"My initial experience of faith had led me to take suffering seriously. I want to rid my idea of faith as a 'codified' abstraction, and transform it into reality."
During the winter of 2002, Alicia Crowl volunteered at the Linn County Child Development Center in Iowa. While there, she worked with "special needs" children who had been sexually or physically abused. While interacting with the children, she discovered a "passion" to help them more than in a volunteer capacity. After graduating in May 2003 with a bachelor's degree in both psychology and religion, Alicia plans to pursue a dual master's degree in social work and divinity.
"I want to stop the vicious cycle of abuse and neglect; to lessen the number of children inflicted with suffering," she says. "My goal is to turn the broken lives of these children around so that they have hope in the future.
In the fall of 2002, Alicia will study in India. "Going to India is an attempt for me to experience what millions of people live with every day - the harsh reality of poverty," she says. "Although I will not get a real picture of what they go through, given that I am able to leave in six months, I hope to deepen my knowledge and compassion for others who are less fortunate."
