"My academic life educates me, but I must apply the lessons I learn in the classroom to the life I live outside of it if I am to excel."
While in high school, Thomas Hogge would not have described himself as a "scholar." Though he achieved success, he recognized that he was simply going through the motions, "reading assignments, writing one-page essays within one-inch margins, and regurgitating notes from the teacher's mouth onto each test." But college is another story. Indeed, his travels to Europe and studies at Oxford have broadened and deepened his understanding of life-long education and his commitment to academics. He is fully aware of the lessons to be learned outside of the college gates, and he has taken full advantage of what school has to offer this time around.
While majoring in English and fine arts, Thomas has been extremely involved in extracurricular activities. He edits his college newspaper, The Hampden-Sydney Tiger, tutors rhetoric and grammar, and serves as captain of the varsity tennis team. He has also developed an interest in photography and continues to sketch and draw whatever captures his imagination.
Thomas will graduate in spring 2003 and would like to continue his studies in English literature. His ultimate career goal is to become an architect.
