Biography: Ms. Hughey is a single-minded single mother who earned several scholarships and played a leadership role at Westchester Community College (WCC) while recording a 3.7 grade point average. She planned a wide variety of campus activities from "Poetry Slams" to human rights observances as chair of student programming. Ms. Hughey also sang gospel and jazz at WCC events and organized orientation for new students. At the same time, she won five scholarships and was elected to the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. One of her teachers said it was a delight to have her around because her radiance lights up the campus.
Ms. Hughey said her college experience helped her become more patient and tolerant with her teen-aged son despite their past differences. "Our communication has been strained at times but is currently fluid and productive," she wrote. "I am a role model for him and I take this responsibility most seriously." One of her faculty advisers said Ms. Hughey often spoke about the struggles and frustrations of being a single mother but said her persistence had paid off since her 18-year-old son was going to graduate from high school this year.
At WCC, Ms. Hughey has majored in communications, a field which she regards as a way to connect with others to teach and empower them. "Through communications.I can assist others, creatively express my thoughts and ideas and free my soul," she says. Her long-term goal is to earn a doctoral degree in management and become an independent consultant providing educational products to social welfare agencies and human resource departments of companies. In addition, she hopes to start her own music-publishing firm and another specialty gift business.
