Biography

Nobuaki Kawakami has his sights set for the United Nations. "I would like to become a part of a movement to change the United Nations, focusing on reorganizing its structure so that it is more responsive and more effective."

The tragedy of September 11 is among the reasons Kawakami is calling for reform there; he believes the U.N. should play a wider role in world security, and, specifically, the fight against terrorism. "Barely has the U.N. appeared on the stage, though it represents the world's government," he says.

Born in Osaka, Japan, Kawakami moved to McCook, Nebraska, where he attended McCook Campus-Mid-Plains Community College Area. While there, Kawakami was president of Phi Beta Lambda, the college's business organization, and was an officer of Phi Theta Kappa.

He received an associate's degree in the spring of 2002 and transferred to the University of Nebraska in Lincoln in the fall to study international relations.

Kawakami would like to receive his master's degree and a doctorate in international relations: "My final destination will be working at the United Nations, focusing more on education and human rights affairs," he says.
