“As a medium-sized fish in a big pond, I can actually learn something.”
Ever since she was singled out in second grade for her reading abilities, Katherine Walecka says she has disliked being a big fish in a little pond. Instead, she seeks out challenging academic environments. “I am happiest when I am surrounded by other talented Young Scholars or when I am in my AP calculus class, struggling to keep up with students who are more talented at mathematics than I.”
In her love of learning, Katherine says she is following in the footsteps of her parents, who immigrated to the United States from Poland in order to earn graduate degrees. She says the investment they made in their own education, and in hers, inspires her to excel. Katherine has won prizes for her poetry, takes pride in playing rugby and has been a tutor throughout high school.
As a Young Scholar, she has taken summer courses in math and gender studies and poetry, attended French camp and participated in a civic education project. Katherine says her experiences, along with the friendships she has made with other Young Scholars, have developed her mind and expanded her heart. She hopes to become a constitutional lawyer working for the American Civil Liberties Union.
