"I learned that I had to put aside any fears of rejection or failure in order to realize my dreams; otherwise, life would be just settling for disappointment."
With only three years of dance training, Kelly Bond took the bold step of making it one of her college majors. Growing up in a small town in Mississippi, she always admired dance, but her mother was unable to pay for more than two weeks of classes. Both her parents taught her that she could achieve the things she wanted through hard work. "I decided that rather than giving up something before I had a chance to try, I would pursue dance." Today she is a professional dancer, choreographer and teacher of children.
Now Kelly intends to expand her horizons as an artist studying European dance-theater at the Laban Centre in London. Dance-theater appeals to Kelly, because it is an amalgamation of dance, theater, music and other art forms. "This integration allows me to present information in a variety of ways that encourages the audience to form its own opinions, rather than closing their minds to a single art form or genre that they may find difficult to grasp."
Kelly hopes her graduate school experience will afford her opportunities to perform and choreograph in new settings. Eventually she plans to devote her time to creating new work. Teaching remains a priority. "I will also continue my work with students, nurturing their creativity in movement, providing them with insight into the world of dance, and helping them to become more intelligent audience members."
