After his parents discovered that he was gay, Daniel Coeyman was given the choice of hiding his sexuality or leaving home and losing his parents' economic support. "In being honest about the sexual aspect of my identity, I validated my right to be respected as a whole person," he says. Daniel worked his way through college, winning awards for his work, and helped others find their voice as a volunteer teaching creative writing to homeless children and taking a lead in making the Gay Lesbian and Bisexual Student Union a recognized university organization.
In his portraits, Daniel seeks to depict the complexity of his subjects. He is inspired by American portrait painter Alice Neel to "collect their souls" on canvas. He chose The New School to pursue a master's because of its spirit of diversity, acceptance, and creativity, which he says is mirrored in the school's location: New York City.
As a professional artist, Daniel looks forward to showing his portraits and sharing his content and ideas with large audiences at galleries in New York. He is also interested in collaborating on creative projects that address tensions between social groups and help foster communication. "At the heart of all my goals is the notion that artists don't exist in a vacuum," he says. "I see my work leading me to teach, share, work with and learn from the people around me."
