Biography

Anna Corey expected to play the violin and the piano all her life, but came to realize that her passion for music could not overcome a muscle problem that caused chronic pain. She dropped her music major for her other love, biology. Still, she maintains a certain fondness for The Orange Blossom Special, a classic fiddle tune she learned from an "adopted grandfather" who took her under his wing when she was the youngest member of the Beaver Dam Area Orchestra. The powerful impact of good health and the value of sharing with others that she saw in that fiddle teacher endure.

During her undergraduate years, Anna put a talent for organizing to work on behalf of social causes: Amnesty International, a Hunger Awareness Week on campus, a CROP Walk for Hunger in Appleton, Wisconsin, and more. Meanwhile, she honed her leadership skills at a National Wildlife Federation conference on women and sustainable development and worked as an unpaid intern for the US Public Interest Research Group, focused on hunger and homelessness. She also earned election to Phi Beta Kappa and graduated summa cum laude.

Now Anna intends to channel her interests in health and service into a medical career. She specifically wants to help victims of conflict, poverty, and natural disasters, most likely through an organization such as Doctors Without Borders. She is also concerned about the consequences of environmental degradation on human health, and would like one day to have an impact on environmental policy.
