"The First World needs to understand the dynamics of the Third World .. In my career I hope to engender collaboration between the served and the server - looking inside the community for the answer."
Brandon Fenley's career interests have bounced from professional artist to table grape farmer to defender of the family farm. He even developed a strong portfolio to submit to art schools. But late in high school, he decided he wanted instead a "more direct, physical role in some small part of the collective work of humanity." A soul-enriching experience rebuilding an old farm with his grandfather led him specifically to major in agricultural economics. At the University of Kentucky, he earned a 4.0 GPA and numerous academic honors.
As he looks now to graduate school, Brandon finds his goal becoming even clearer. He will pursue combined master's degrees in economics and public policy because he believes they can propel him on a career helping to alleviate poverty through economic development and agricultural policy. Ideally, he would like to work in the Peace Corps or for Catholic Relief Services before moving on to such organizations as US AID, the United Nations, or even the World Trade Organization. Despite his global aspirations, though, Brandon is highly aware of poverty in his own backyard. For several years, he has played a major role in organizing a university-wide conference at Kentucky on poverty and its causes in the Lexington area.
