Biography
Hilary Glazer's medical goals are shaped partly by her experience with her father's lung cancer. She credits his oncologist for giving the family wisdom and strength for the 18 months her father lived after the cancer diagnosis. The oncologist also helped her family endure the pain when he died. Hilary said that was in contrast to the family's primary care physician who misdiagnosed her father's disease. And she was equally appalled by a hospital's "tight-fisted, shameful" stance as her father was dying.
Hilary had won praise for her years of lab work, including cell signaling research, but what she learned about medicine during her father's illness prompted her to turn away from a career in research. Instead, she wants hands-on contact with patients, where she can have an impact on their health and "to their sense of well-being." She wants none of the "the apologetic, ashamed face that looks away at the sight of human suffering."
She now realizes "that my dad's death has given me a unique depth of understanding for the plights of patients and their families." If her own family was hurt by the hospital treatment, she knows it can be far worse for many Hispanics who face additional alienation due to language barriers or poverty. As a Spanish-speaking physician, she hopes to "devise creative solutions to the problems posed by the current health care system."
