Biography

Stacey Jones has vivid memories of the after school program where she and her friends played games, created arts and crafts, and listened to music. Most of the kids were from single parent, low-income homes. "Participating in this program we were not labeled or judged.Rather, we were constantly encouraged and praised for our talents and abilities." Stacey says the support she received growing up from community organizations, mentors, and family members helped her excel. She hopes to have the same positive impact as a community leader.

Stacey is pursuing a master's in social service administration. Eventually, she wants to create and lead a youth-based community center aimed at developing the educational, social, and artistic promise of young people. "My outlook on the social sector is distinctive in that I have been a recipient of social services as well as a provider, thus I have developed a dichotomous view on how social programs can increase the quality of their services."

Stacey is already making a difference. She manages nine Head-Start sites, supervising student volunteers and finding ways to draw university resources into the program. She has interned at the Dekalb County Child Advocacy Center in Atlanta. She was recently chosen as Woman of the Year-Emerging Student Leader by the Monroe County Commission on Women.
