Biography

Jasmine Yoon's family moved to the U.S. when she was starting eighth grade and knew only a few phrases of English. Four years later, she was nominated and chosen to receive the Jefferson Scholarship at UVA. The Jefferson Scholars Foundation seeks to attract the most promising students nationally, inviting over 2,000 schools to nominate students of exceptional leadership, scholarship, and citizenship. One scholarship reviewer commented, "Jasmine's record of achievement . . . was perhaps the most remarkable that the Jefferson Scholars Foundation has encountered."

Over those four years, Jasmine had spent eight hours a day after school studying, memorizing words, and mimicking the pronunciation of a CNN news anchor. She was now fluent, senior class valedictorian, and the only student on the Charles County Board of Education.

In her third year at UVA, Jasmine received the Gray/Carrington Scholarship, which chooses one individual from the top third-year students. Jasmine had thrown herself into the life of the school, taking active leadership roles in a number of organizations and activities. She took on major roles as the head resident on the Lawn, as the vice president of The Raven Society (UVA's venerable honor society), as the public relations chair for the Dance Marathon, and as a volunteer at the Women's Center, Growing Youth Ministry, and Admissions Committee.
