Biography

Thomas Juskevich's aptitude and fascination for mathematics took him to Virginia Tech right out of high school. A major in both physics and philosophy, Thomas studied the mathematical methods of problem solving. But as time went by, Thomas yearned for a more broad and conceptual understanding that took him beyond any mathematical formulae offered in his textbooks.

After his sophomore year, Thomas transferred to St. John's College in Annapolis, "hoping to find a place where I could analyze the fundamental presuppositions that lie behind any formal system." The course work offered at St. John's in math and science has helped him achieve the understanding he was longing for, he says, and has helped him focus on other areas of study, such as education.

Last fall, Thomas interned in the government relations division of the Maryland Association of Boards of Education. His exposure to legislative procedures in education policy furthered his interests in education reform. It also helped him realize that he could affect change more by working at the grassroots level, such as a nonprofit organization, rather than running for public office. "This is not to say that elected officials do not have an ability to be influential political leaders," he says. "Because I am interested in a broad reconstitution of American education, I feel that in a grassroots organization, I will actually be able to take on a greater leadership role."
