"I began to realize that although I did not obtain an education while young, I was now more prepared to appreciate and embrace it."
Graduate Scholarship Biography (prepared September 2005):
First named a Jack Kent Cooke Scholar in 2002 through the Undergraduate Scholarship Program, Lori Langdon will enter Sam Houston's doctoral program in clinical forensics this fall even as her son continues his undergraduate education. Lori's desire to pursue an advanced degree extends, in fact, from her commitment to setting an example for her two children. Getting this far has been a dream Lori would not surrender. By the time she was 19, Lori had dropped out of high school and married. Now, 24 years later, she and her husband not only have raised two children, Lori has also graduated from Sam Houston State University summa cum laude. All along, her husband, who is a truck driver, has been her leading supporter.
Lori hopes to teach at a university or community college. She is also eager to do psychotherapy or psychological assessments in legal settings, where she senses there will be a tremendous responsibility to be extremely ethical and unbiased. "I feel I can meet these challenges," she says. Professor Glenn Sanford at Sam Houston State University has no doubt Lori will succeed. He calls her "a model non-traditional student who has overcome a great deal and taken advantage of the opportunities afforded to her."
Undergraduate Scholarship Biography (prepared Oct. 2002):
Lori Landgon forgot how much she enjoyed learning until she returned to school after 19 years. Since enrolling at North Harris College in Houston, Lori has been involved in the honors program, in which all three of her honors projects were selected for presentation at college conferences. She also is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and has been selected as a Rising Star at North Harris.
Since returning to college, Lori says she is a better role model and parent to her children. "Since I have pursued further education, my children have been influenced by the importance that I have put on my education," she says.
In turn, Lori has been influenced by her professors and has decided to pursue a career in teaching. She received an associate's degree in education and psychology in the spring of 2002 and transferred to Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, in the fall.
