"If my dream (of becoming a surgeon) becomes reality one day, then I owe it all to my family, inspiring mentors, teachers and the friends who have encouraged me along the way."
After one year, Hiep Nguyen had his doubts about staying at Tarrant County College-NW in Forth Worth, Texas. After serving as president of the Alpha Delta Delta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, he considered transferring to another school just before his second year. However, "faith" soon showed him that he was meant to stay to help the chapter overcome "obstacles" it would soon face that year. The result: At the Texas Regional Convention, Hiep was awarded a medallion for his leadership and named to Phi Theta Kappa's "Hall of Honor."
Says Hiep: "At that moment, I realized how important every minute I spent working to promote scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship throughout the college was to others." He equates the honor to "winning the gold at the Olympics," but says it is the friendships he developed that made him understand his purpose for remaining at Tarrant.
Hiep received his associate's degree in biology in the spring of 2002 and will begin his third year of college at the University of North Texas in Denton. His ultimate goal is to attend medical school and specialize in reconstructive surgery. "The ultimate goal in life for everyone," he says is "not to become what others want you to become, but to try to make a difference in the lives of the people you meet, every day."
