Biography

Jessica Barnes began her pursuit of an associate’s degree at Yavapai College while still a high-school senior and has worked to pay her tuition bills while attending school full-time.

At Yavapai, Jessica has earned near-perfect grades in the honors college, received an honors scholarship, and worked as a secretary in the Modern Languages Department. Jessica transferred in the fall of 2002 to the Barrett Honors College at Arizona State University in Phoenix. Her long-term plans are to work as a lawyer in the field of child advocacy to address and prevent child abuse and tighten the laws on child abuse. She wants to create accessible centers where abused children and adolescents can safely obtain counseling, advice, and assistance. “While some children seem to be growing up in a supportive, loving community, the reality is that they have nowhere else to go and no one to turn to,” she says.

Jessica has also been an active volunteer and leader. As fundraising co-chair for the Yavapai Honors College, Jessica helped organize a rummage sale to raise money for an educational trip to New York City. As one of the program’s seminar leaders, she prepared class presentations, activities, reading, and research materials for group discussions. She also worked in a local cooperative effort to serve meals to the homeless.
