Biography

Aaron Fulkerson is the first to admit that it took him some time to see "the value of a formal education." Referring to his high school transcripts, Fulkerson says he strayed from his classroom studies, believing that true knowledge could be sought "through experiencing life rather than through school." After high school, he backpacked throughout the United States and Europe in pursuit of knowledge and self-development.

At age 23, Aaron had a change of heart. He enrolled in Durham Technical Community College to study computers. While there, he also volunteered at organizations and schools, helping adults and children learn computer programs and the Internet. "When I began volunteering, I noticed that many of the people I was helping had never really seen what is out there in the world," he says. It was then that he realized that knowledge of computers is power - it can help the disadvantaged, providing them valuable job skills and direction. He decided to devote his time and educational pursuits to improving computer science and narrowing the "digital divide."

While attending Durham Tech, Aaron has worked as an instructor for North Carolina Central University's TOP-CAT Program. He also served as an adjunct lab instructor and founded Gurion Digital, a small information technology/systems consulting firm.

In the fall of 2002, Aaron transferred to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he is working toward a bachelor's degree. He also plans to pursue a master's degree in business administration.
