"I see great advantages to the rural lifestyle in instilling such values as responsibility, patience, and faith."
Stephen Anderson grew up on his family's farm in southern Illinois, working machinery and helping to decide what crops to plant and how to market them. In high school, he was a leader in the county's 4-H Federation, and became valedictorian of his class. Enrolling at Lake Land Community College, he achieved a 3.96 GPA, earned a place in Phi Theta Kappa honor society, and served as a student representative on the Lake Land Board of Trustees.
Stephen intends to combine his academic skills and knowledge of farming by seeking a degree in agricultural engineering, with an emphasis on soil and water conservation, then to obtain a degree in agricultural law. "The unique challenges of agriculture must be balanced against the need for agriculture to function within the confines of ever more restrictive laws regarding conservation and safety," he says. "I hope to aid farmers seeking to comply with the law, especially in the area of conservation."
