“Teaching history is getting the stories back into the hands of those who created it. Not just teaching in a classroom, but teaching in museums, on the streets, through words and images, or even music.”
PROFILE: Jessica Dawkins was awarded Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship in 2006. Jessica considers herself a Louisville historian. “I want to lead the next generation of historians in the preservation of Louisville’s past.” She is an intern at the Louisville museum, where her research has been incorporated into an exhibit of photographs, artifacts, and oral histories.
She will study in the University of Cincinnati’s public history program, which specializes in the Ohio Valley. She believes the possibilities of teaching history are endless and intends to explore every one of them. Being a Jack Kent Cooke Scholar has changed her life and the lives of those around her. “It has even changed my community as I strive to repay my gratitude through service, contribution, and a dedicated effort to make a difference.”
INSPIRATION: Jessica was inspired by her best friend who convinced her to apply to college.
ASPIRATION: Jessica aspires to be a historian and teacher.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE: Jessica is a volunteer at the Portland Museum, where she conducts research to aid interpretative plans for the Portland Wharf Park and three heritage trails as a Preserve American Project. She also conducts guided tours through the Farmington Historic Home.
ACCOLADES: Jessica is a member of numerous honor societies, including Phi Alpha Theta and Tau Sigma. She received the Smith Endowed Scholarship from her university’s history department and was a President’s Scholar.
INTERESTING FACT: Jessica grew up on a farm in northwestern Indiana.
