"I wish to use my mind to help humanity explore the boundaries of our knowledge of space, time, and the nature of reality."
Heather Morrison earned a 4.0 GPA at Cochise College, was selected for the All-Arizona Academic Team and Phi Theta Kappa honor society and, at the same time, wrote for the literary magazine, performed with a modern dance troupe, and collected awards for her sketches.
But getting to such a stage required perseverance and tough choices. After years of trying unsuccessfully to help her relatives overcome addictions and alcoholism, Heather decided the best way she could help her loved ones was to help herself. She moved from North Carolina to Arizona, divorced her alcoholic husband, and started life over with her sons in a transitional shelter for women in her adopted state. "Taking this route allowed me to stop providing support for their denials," she says.
Even in the midst of her new life, she still endures reminders of painful times, including the recent death of her brother. "My struggles continue," she says. But she is determined to press on, and plans to major in physics at Northern Arizona University and then earn a doctorate in physics.
