"The overwhelming and preventable suffering that stems from global poverty gnaws at me."
As head delegate in a Model United Nations program at Triton College, Caraleigh Holverson had what she describes as "an epiphany." She says that while listening to a presentation by one of the world's most respected economists, she realized "how passionately I felt driven toward development issues." "I believe," she adds, "that there is a basic quality of life that each individual deserves."
Compelled by this philosophy, Caraleigh intends to seek a bachelor's degree in international policy at Georgetown University before going to work overseas on African poverty and development.
Her empathy for those less fortunate also springs in part from her experience with the pain of a chronic illness that plagued her for many years. "Having to battle my own body to achieve my goals stoked an inner fire that only inspires me to work harder," she says.
Through that work ethic, Caraleigh earned a 4.0 GPA at Triton, high academic honors, and selection as a student laureate by the Lincoln Academy of Illinois, the only two-year college student in the state to achieve this distinction. She also gave part-time care to an autistic child and coordinated a registration drive that signed up 100 new voters.
