Sage Sage Matthews

Biography

When Sage was six years old, her mother began teaching her to sew. By the age of ten, she was taking garment construction classes. She has been sewing and sketching ever since. "Clothing is the medium I have chosen to express myself artistically," Sage says. "I hope to speak through my use of fashion to address social and cultural issues that affect humans globally."  This desire led Sage to pursue her BFA degree in Fashion Design from California College of the Arts.

From early on in her studies, her teachers spoke of Ms. Matthews as an outstanding student, eager to learn more than the textbooks or teachers provide. "She is a sponge for knowledge," concluded Rebecca Murtaugh, one of her professors at CR. "She is not merely waiting to be spoon-fed information." Cynthia Hooper, professor of art, was equally impressed, observing, "Her drawings are precise and perceptive, boldly composed and completely captivating. Developing drawing skills as finely honed as hers takes much concentration and patience - features that Sage possesses in abundance .... Sage is also extremely tenacious, very responsible, and a very hard worker .. Her infectious enthusiasm buoys her fellow students as well."

Sage now lives and designs in Los Angeles, CA.
