Peter Dugan began playing the piano when he was five. At age 14, he was one of seven piano students from around the world accepted to the Perlman Music Program (PMP) led by violinist and conductor Itzhak Perlman. After three years in the high school program, Peter will participate this season in PMP’s chamber music workshop. Equally at home playing classical music and jazz, Peter wants to do something unique. His dream is to perform classical and jazz in the same concert.
Peter, whose academic accomplishments mirror his musical talents, says his love of the arts has inspired him to study Latin and English literature and to take a lead role in the school choir. “In a very real sense he is one of the most exciting and accomplished students I have ever been associated with, and he is a humble and unassuming person besides,” says his English teacher James O’Brien.
Peter says being a Young Scholar has given him pride and confidence. “My future is in no way certain and my goals are often mixed with fantasy. When I start to doubt myself, remembering that the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation believes in me and is on my side renews my drive and motivates me to keep shooting for the stars.”
