“I am about to stretch my wings and embark on a greater journey after having been nourished by kindness.”
Jaehyun Im enjoys biology. He is involved in a research project after school at Columbia University Medical Center, where he is trying to create transgenic mice and has presented his research hypothesis to scientists in Paris. He is also a musician. Every Saturday, he plays trumpet in the Juilliard School pre-college division. His third love is tennis. Last year, Jaehyun helped his high school varsity team to its second consecutive state semi-finals as co-captain.
“Some people ask me how I juggle music, sports, and school without looking dead all the time,” he says. “Even if it meant losing some sleep, I have been unable to quit any of them because I enjoy too much the delight that comes from performing a Mahler symphony, winning a tiebreak in a tennis match or completing a lengthy research project.’”
Jaehyun says his opportunities as a Young Scholar have helped him establish career and educational goals, as well as develop his hobbies, which he believes have made him a more complete person. “Music has helped me realize that handling some nerves and putting in passionate effort is all it takes to accomplish something great. Now I am ready to tackle anything thrown in my direction wholeheartedly.”
