“I find that the more I learn, the more that there is to question. There will never be an end to what I can learn.”
Maria Frendberg has been interested in mathematics ever since she was little. She says one of her earliest childhood memories is sitting at the dinner table with her father learning algebra. By seventh grade, she was competing at the state level on a high school mathematics team. Today, as a high school senior, she is working on an independent mathematics research project at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
Maria’s talents are not limited to mathematics. As a Young Scholar, she has attended a private school in Michigan, where she plays bass in the school orchestra and jazz band, is involved in the German club, and is captain of the varsity ski team. In the summer, she has taken courses in Latin and chemistry and gone to music camp.
Maria says she has had some extraordinary experiences, including the opportunity for true exploration in mathematics. Her yearlong project at University of Wisconsin, Madison under the mentorship of a prominent mathematician has sparked a passion for research, which she hopes to continue during her undergraduate years. “From my work thus far, I have learned to think in new ways that allow me to not only learn, but to pursue my own ideas,” she says.
