Biography

By the time Sean Eagan finished eighth grade, he had already completed all the math courses offered at his high school. Becoming a Young Scholar, Sean says, has made it possible for him to continue advanced math and pursue other studies through opportunities like summer enrichment programs, online math courses, and being tutored at a local college.

“The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation helped me in so many ways,” Sean says. “However, the most important to me was that they understood that I really wanted to stay in my hometown with the kids I’ve grown up with. They provided ways for me to still get a great education without having to leave my friends. Friends and community have always been very important to me.”

Sean strives to be well rounded. In addition to excelling academically, he also runs track, plays drums, and is an active volunteer in his community. Sean also plays on the varsity basketball team and is very serious about the sport. “Every morning you will find me in the gym before school practicing my shooting. I’ve had to work very hard to even play this season,” says Sean. Sean broke his leg last school year and says he learned a valuable personal lesson while working hard to be back at full strength for basketball this season. “I’ve discovered that I’ve been able to do almost anything I really set my mind to.”
