"Whether I am looking at stem cells in fish eyes or measuring chlorine atoms in reaction chambers, simply taking a part in the uncovering of new concepts and paradigms deeply excites me. On the other hand, when I am teaching life skills to Cuban refugees or reading about the renaissance in Spain, I know my language study has been indispensable."
Jordan Sand is fascinated by the world around him. Whether looking at the properties of a carbon atom, or studying politics or art, he loves to learn. This is part of what motivates him to become a doctor "because I will be able to learn an immense amount about the human body and apply that knowledge to the alleviation of pain."
A football injury gave Jordan his first exposure to doctors and medical technology, and he was immediately hooked. At Whitworth, where he graduated summa cum laude, he became the chief emergency medical technician, on call to help with any emergency. At the same time, he did research at two other universities.
He also counseled children of addicted parents. He studied the intricacies of chemical dependency and "the damage wrought upon innocent children as a result of their parents' destructive decisions." He realized that his other motivation for going into medicine was to have an impact on the lives of others. He saw that potential one day in a group counseling session when a child asked him "How can I tell my friends not to do this?"
