"Having had my fair share of dance-related injuries, I know how important it is to have access to a health professional who has had direct experience with the body in motion."

Matthew Grierson has helped professors identify molecular markers for spinal cord neurons through the study of zebrafish. He also is a dancer and choreographer chosen as outstanding student by the University of Utah's College of Fine Arts. These interests may seem an unusual combination, but Matthew disagrees. "I have studied the molecular pathways of respiration," he says, "while at the same time learning how to use directed breathing techniques to refine my own movement pathways."
Dance helped Matthew center his life following some difficult personal times. After transferring to the University of Utah, he prospered both in modern dance, biology, and chemistry. Matthew now looks forward to Boston University School of Medicine, especially working in its public hospital with medically underserved people. In Utah, he said, some doctors "have been more concerned with asserting their blanket notions of morality than treating their patients' health." He aims, in contrast, "to be a doctor people can trust, knowing I will have their best interests at heart, regardless of their cultural or biological demographic."
