Biography

In 6th grade, Chris Fields won a mock trial event, representing the "unpopular" side; he argued against building a new middle school in his town. During his undergraduate studies, Chris interned for three summers with a lawyer in his hometown. A case handled by that lawyer defined Chris's aspirations. A mentally disturbed adolescent who had been charged with a felony faced prosecution as an adult. Chris's employer successfully argued that the teen remain in the juvenile system to receive treatment and counseling. Afterwards, the boy's mother tearfully thanked the legal team for saving her son's life.

Chris has always looked for unique challenges, and tested himself in a strenuous military undergraduate program. "I have been able to participate in a top-notch honors program, play sports, be involved with music, theater, and clubs, and do it all under a renowned system of honor and discipline." He cherishes most the experience of serving as prosecutor on the VMI Honor Court. During his undergraduate years, he also volunteered at local homeless shelters, participated in food drives, and led a caroling group for hospitals and shelters.

Chris's family historically possessed strong union ties; as the first member of his family to attend professional school, Chris wants to enter the field of labor and employment law and focus on civil rights. He acknowledges that the financial cost of law school is daunting. "As someone who aspires to practice in an area of the law that is not always the most lucrative, finding ways to pay for school is of the utmost concern." Chris can now fulfill his long-held ambition. "The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholarship will greatly help me. I want to be an attorney unencumbered by debt and free to pursue a career in public service."
