"I am motivated by the idea that my work could outlive my immediate efforts and leave a positive lasting impact on the world."
As a child in the Ukraine, Yuriy Bronshteyn says he became cognizant of the fragility of life when both his mother and sister fell ill. After they recovered, the family immigrated to the United States, convinced that living under the shadow of the Chernobyl nuclear accident had compromised their health. "As a youth, I felt powerless to help my family. I resolved to become a physician and medical researcher to empower myself with the ability to protect, extend and enhance both their lives and the lives of others." After he completes his medical degree, Yuriy plans to pursue training in Anesthesia/Critical Care and specialize in Neuro Critical Care to treat critically ill patients with neurological injuries.
Yuriy's many achievements and awards are not confined to the sciences. He is a talented writer and was selected as a Gaines Fellow at Kentucky for his abilities in the humanities. He created the university's first ever satire publication -"The Colonel"- to give voice to the muted progressive movement on campus.
"Humor allowed us (a group of progressively leaning students) to give artistic cover to dissent, to advance social justice with a comic spirit."
