Biography

Andrew Hayashi's life seemingly bends many conventions. This former football team captain cites as a minor epiphany (reinforcing his career choice), a debate on feminist critique and criticism of economics.

The economics student, who wrestled with other people's perception of his identity in high school, not only chose an intellectually conservative Jesuit school in Georgetown University, but also overcame the initial resistance of some scholars by creating his own field of study that combined a mathematical endeavor with what to some may appear to be the unrelated liberal discipline of philosophy.

About his high school experience he wrote: "I reinvented my public identity while in high school, revealing, in a semi-hostile environment, my religious convictions at a time when my character was defined by athletic and academic accomplishments."

Andrew desires to make microeconomic research more accessible to the public by pursuing a research career that may lead toward new thinking about welfare economics. To do that, he reasons, will require introducing a philosophical and psychological approaches into more traditional economic practices, theories, and models.

"I am passionate about economic ideas and ultimately bringing them to bear on policy dialogue," he says.

Andrew has already had a mix of experience that should propel him toward his goal. He graduated fifth in his Upper Canada High School class and passed the International Baccalaureate with distinction. He spent a year studying economic and philosophy at Oxford and has had a number of work assignments in his field, including research on behalf of the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, D.C., and the Japan Economic Institute.
