"I want to spend my life's work in social services."
Garett Staley is devoting her career to empowering people in crisis to change their lives. Garett suffered through experiences where she could have benefited from the intervention of a caring and knowledgeable professional. "When I realized that I had survived my experiences and become a richer human being because of them, I developed a desire to help others discover that same road."
Garett is pursuing a master's degree in social work and plans to put her skills to use as a clinician, a teacher, and in program development. One of her goals is to organize free dental services for people recovering from homelessness or addiction. She is disheartened to see clients achieve so much, only to have limited job options because of missing or bad teeth. Garett also wants to develop programs that combine affordable housing with intensive educational support services for children to help break the cycle of poverty.
For the past six years, she has worked at a treatment facility for substance abusing women and their children and plans to return after earning her graduate degree. "It is an incredibly gratifying experience to witness clients enter treatment strung out and spiritually broken; and then gain life skills, learn how to parent and hold a job, and exit treatment successfully into the community."
