"The greatest reward I can think of is that my goals in life, while wholly my own, will be able to reward my mother as well. I am motivated by her examples of integrity and commitment."
Michael Bennett is one of those remarkable people who are talented in both the sciences and the arts. In addition to pursuing a career in mathematics, he dreams of writing and performing his own comedy. In 2005, he won the Thomson Award for most outstanding student in the honors program at Providence.
James will study pure mathematics at Loyola University in Chicago, having picked the Second City in part for its vibrant arts scene. He ultimately hopes to achieve an advanced degree in mathematics, contributing research to the fields of topology, number theory, and graph theory. "Contributing research to these fields is important, but I do have a very devoted interest in becoming a college professor," he says.
James acknowledges that his academic path was not always clear to him and is grateful to a college English professor for helping him find his way. "I want to be a professor that helps to recognize potential and mentor the misdirected, as he did for me."
