Emil Bove III

Biography

Emil Bove's interest in the intersection of law and policy blossomed while he was attending college in New York's capital, earning SUNY-Albany's Phi Beta Kappa Award for Academic Excellence and a 4.0 GPA. During that time, he completed a variety of internships in the state government and wrote a thesis on the American system of corporate governance. After winning a Sagner Fellowship at Williams College to study progressive public policy in the early 20th century, Emil founded SUNY-Albany's chapter of Democracy Matters to educate students about campaign finance reform. He also made time for athletics - as a co-captain and two-time Academic All-American, he helped lead the school's lacrosse team to an NCAA tournament berth during his senior year.

Emil was disappointed, however, when his efforts at SUNY-Albany did not lead him directly to law school. Motivated by his brother's perseverance in earning admission to the US Naval Academy after an initial rejection, Emil decided to move to Manhattan and take a job as a paralegal in the US Attorney's Office. Just months after graduation, he found himself working on several criminal prosecution teams. He enjoyed the process of helping to build arguments and anticipate defense strategy, and impressed the prosecutors with his ability to glean salient information from disparate facts.

Emil's time as a paralegal served as a powerful learning experience that convinced him that he wanted to work to improve people's lives through public service. In 2005, he was admitted to Georgetown University Law Center. He hopes to work on the front lines of law enforcement and eventually move into a policy-making role as well.
