Biography

Rachel Alpert is a musician, lover of language, and world traveler. With the Yale Symphony Orchestra, she has been to South Korea, Prague, Vienna, and Budapest. Through other means, she lived for eight weeks in China and visited Israel. There, she recalls being inspired to return to the area to study its people more closely. "These trips have shown me the importance of learning about other cultures and peoples by spending time in their countries. Combining personal discussions with academic education and language training opens doors to new worlds of understanding."

Accordingly, she intends to be active in international foreign policy after completing her education. "I am certain . . . that I would like to use my language skills and educational background to do work that directly affects women and children by improving their living conditions and societal place."

In the U.S., Rachel works to improve the lives of children as a volunteer tutor in elementary schools and as a volunteer flute teacher. She also led the fundraising committee of the Yale Symphony Orchestra "in hopes of enabling the orchestra to reach out more to the local community by busing public school children to concerts."

She was a student representative to the Committee to Review Yale College Education, has performed in soup kitchens and hospitals, organized benefits as part of The Musical Cure, and served on the dean's committee for student grievances, among other volunteer work.

Rachel is proficient in Spanish and Chinese, and was the recipient of the Light Fellowship to study in China. She interned in Senator Barbara Mikulski's Washington, D.C. office. She is also a second degree black belt Ninjutsu instructor, a martial art she studied for 13 years.

Rachel attended Tel Aviv University's Lowy School for Overseas Students and is now pursuing a law degree at Harvard University.
