"Knowing firsthand the particular power a teacher possesses - the ability not only to instill knowledge and encourage academic growth, but also to set an example of life experience, depth of perception, and sympathetic understanding that a student may well value and remember - that motivates me to follow that path and to emulate that example."

Biography

During one week of his junior year at Oberlin College, Glenn Lacki had the lead role in The Fantasticks as well as the task of finishing "about 54 pages of academic research and writing across five extremely varied subjects" that touched on Latin and Greek, Old English, and Walt Whitman. Glenn succeeded on all counts but learned the hard way to work ahead. Then again, he has made a habit of learning fast. Thomas Van Nortwick, chair of Oberlin's Classics Department, calls Glenn a "spectacular linguist.who learned Latin grammar from scratch one summer and enrolled in the Virgil class in September."

The classics first came alive for Glenn when a high school teacher turned ancient history into dramatic stories. Since then, Glenn has published a partial translation of the Iliad and written papers on early Christian historical consciousness and the use of rhetoric in heresy and orthodoxy in the late Roman Empire.

Glenn continues to pursue interests beyond the classics. He has a first-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, which he used to teach to young children, and he facilitated development of a men's health outreach program at Oberlin. At Oxford, he intends to earn a master's and then a doctorate in classics, coupled with a master of philosophy in classical archaeology. His research interest is Roman imperial archaeology and architecture. The man he wants to become is "a cultured scholar, a cosmopolitan contributor to the world community, a faithful and considerate friend, and hopefully one day a tender, loving, and devoted father."
