Biography

Morgan Cloud's parents left Minnesota to follow their dreams to Hawaii. He wants to leave the islands to follow his dreams in contemporary dance. His mother taught dance at the local university and he easily gravitated toward performing arts there but for years stayed backstage, as a stage manager, lighting designer, and master electrician. When he began dancing, he found it more difficult than any college course - yet exhilarating in its physical and mental discipline and more creative than technical work.

At the University of Hawaii he flourished as a dancer. He also designed lights, choreographed, and performed as often as he could - and that dedication won him a solo spot at a regional dance festival in Washington state. Other breaks followed: a summer of study with the American Dance Festival and then a semester with the prestigious London Contemporary Dance School, as an exchange student from Hawaii. When he left London, his teachers gave him an unprecedented invitation to return as part of their postgraduate touring company, EDge.

The American Dance Festival first showed him "the importance of concepts in art, how it could introduce new ideas to an audience, and how dance was not just an entertaining diversion in everyday life." He still dreams of joining a touring company "but my new ambition is to make works that can touch people."
