"One of the best decisions I ever made was to volunteer in my community. Starting in high school, I have had a broad spectrum of volunteer experiences, ranging from environmental conservation work to volunteering at homeless shelters and from medical relief work to digging sanitation systems in Third World communities."
Westin Amberge credits his mother for showing him "what it means to be a family-to love someone so much that you sacrifice your own well-being for theirs." Her example, as a single mother working to support him and his sister, taught him "to have a positive outlook on life, to value honesty and compassion and to maintain my integrity at all costs."
His many medical mission trips show that he is acting on those lessons. He led two month-long trips to the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica and in 2006 took medical relief trips to Peru and Ecuador. He has become a skilled organizer, founding a campus chapter of the Foundation for the International Medical Relief of Children (FIMRC) and coordinating 20 campus groups to raise $20,000 for tsunami relief. Today, he directs operations of all FIMRC college chapters.
For three years, he has served as a medical liaison for health care professionals who volunteer to help the uninsured through a local Mercy Health Center. He saw firsthand the power of individuals working together to change the lives of many. "I believe that if I can have this kind of impact as a student, I can make an even bigger impact as a doctor." He is honing his leadership and management skills toward just that goal. "Everyone has setbacks and failures but holding onto my vision of making positive change in the world allows me to work past mine."
