Biography

When Anna Fiskin and her mother emigrated from Belarus in 1995, they spoke little English and knew little about American customs. But she overcome several obstacles and is on her way to a successful career. She not only learned English, she volunteered at a center to teach English and financial skills to immigrant families. "I took what I learned from our negative experience and used it to help others."

She has done the same thing with medicine. She always wanted to be a doctor. Her grandparents, both of them physicians, had reared her. As a preschooler she made house visits with her grandfather, and played with the children he treated at the local hospital. He taught her "that a good physician is more than just a skillful surgeon but a compassionate and respectful human being." Her early encounters with U.S. medicine were nothing like that.

As a volunteer in a hospital's geriatric unit, she was appalled when a nurse made fun of a cantankerous patient. The nurse told her to restrain the patient. "Instead, I sat down next to him and held his hand. He calmed down instantly." The man thanked Anna for her kindness. She realized she "had the strength to stand up to the negative aspects of the medical system." Today, she looks forward to being "a physician, activist, and scholar."
