Biography

Natalie Black's sense of mission comes directly from her experiences. When she was a volunteer in a geriatric unit, she saw a lonely retired auto mechanic light up when she listened to him explain the intricacies of repairing a Model-T. She watched both her grandmothers fight terminal illness in her home. "I saw the impact of both caring and non-caring doctors on the mental state of the patient and the family," Natalie recalls.

Natalie's aim is to become one of the caring doctors, and to make affordable, quality medical care available, especially to people who are elderly and poor. She is pursuing a master's in public health along with her M.D. to qualify for work on policy issues with non-medical professionals.

To advance her career, Natalie has already shadowed physicians, medical students, nurses, and medical researchers. As she prepares to take another step toward her goal, she has a special reason to look forward to medical school at the University of Nebraska: From day one, its curriculum allows students to do their clinical training at the student-run clinic for indigent patients. Natalie is eager for the work to begin.
